OVERCOMING CRSThere are about 60-70 1/1 guys that participate in a private email list for 1st Bn, 1st Marines. It's a great place to ask "Do you remember...", "Has anybody heard from..", "what was the name of that bridge..." and anything else that is on anybody's mind. A problem we all have in common is that we don't remember everything that happened and in what order. A cool thing that happens on the list is that people get together. Everybody remembers something, and collectively we remember a lot more. In October, 1999, there was a reunion for 1/1. There were people from all companies for all periods from 1965-1971. It was an opportunity to renew old friendships and make new friends, all with the common bond of 1/1. A month after the reunion, the following thread went by on the list.
From: Dan King This is kind of long for an email list, but it's one of my war stories and I'm in a chatty mood, so..[Proceeded to tell BAS/rat killing story located on BAS page of this site] From: EYates This rat story of Dans brings back memories of the
rats at Con Thien in Nov of 67...those of yall who were there remember
them....Monsters...also remember a few rats while up on 881S, them were big
fookers also... From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Subject: Re: [1stBn1stMarines] BAS/rat killing story Dan, great rat killin story!! Reminds me of the time I caught a rat wearing
my helmet & flack jacket at Khe Sahn. I was gonna kill it, but the bastard
made corporal the next day and put me on a work detail. Had some good buds in
H&S, and was wonderin if you, or anyone remembers them. Jimmy King, Tom
Ketchum, Donny Ditchen, Lyle Meyers, Rick Collier, Buddy Mauler? When I wasn't
FOin with the companies, I was in FSCC, which was always TAD to 1/1 H&S, so
I got to hang with these guys. We killed some rats together. From: Jim Thompson I Remember Jimmy King and Rick Collier. Both radio
operators, have a pic of both of them. Wasn't Jimmy from Texas and was a disk
Jockey somewhere in Dallas I believe. From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Jimmy was from Texas. Don't know about the DJ bit. I also have some pics of
Rick & Jim. Both great guys. As soon as I get a working scanner I'll put
them up. I saw Rick Collier's name in the 1/1 personnel directory. Don't think
he was at the reunion. I think I will try to find Jimmy via internet, to try and
get him to the next reunion. From: Jim Thompson Mike, From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Subject: Re: [1stBn1stMarines] Jimmy King Have you checked with the hotel here in Detroit to see if they have your
album? If you like, I can follow up on that for you, through my hotel
connections from the reunion. Funny thing, someone at the reunion had their pics
out for viewing at the table outside our registration room. I put a picture of
me and Jimmy, holding a sign at Con Thien, the "Place of Angels". I
forgot to pick it up later, so now it is in someone's collection. Good thing I
have an extra copy of it. I'll be sure to scan that one for you. I will keep
looking for Mr. King, but you guys with the common names are tough to find! From: Jim Thompson No kidding I had a copy of that pic. From: Jim Thompson Hold on I';m looking at the pic now. The sign says
"Through this gate pass the world finest fighting men they wear a green
uniform they call themselves Marines-The place of Angels. Is that you on the
right? From: Jim Thompson On the back of the pic it says Jim and Mickey. This is
something. From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Subject: Re: [1stBn1stMarines] Jimmy King Yup, that's me. Look on the back of the pic. If it's the one I left at the
table, I wrote on the back that it was me and Jimmy at Con Thein. How's this for
a coincidence? If that is your own copy, then you and I knew each other. Were
you in Comm with Jim and Collier? From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Subject: Re: [1stBn1stMarines] Jimmy King Holy Shit, that IS your copy of the same pic! I was Mickey in RVN. I remember
a guy named Thompson that we nick named Tommy. Could that be you? Do you
remember Tony Fraini, Rodney Harrelson, Harold Zook, Art Coscia, Mark Kins? This
is wild, man! From: LRHMGE@xxxxxxx.com Subject: Re: [1stBn1stMarines] Jimmy King Unbelievable Jim! Sometimes I curse the years that have fogged my memory so
much, but this site is sure helping. I never want to forget the friendships of
those times. Yes, that means I must also remember some bad times, but it's all
connected. Thank you Ed Yates, for your work on this thing. We all owe you and
the other moderators a collective "well done"! I'm proud to have
written the words that are on the plaque that we gave you at the reunion, but
they really come from all of us. And I never really believed those things that
Fugi says about you, but in my mind he is still my Lt., so I gotta pretend to go
along. You understand. From: Jim Thompson Dear Mickey, From: Jim Thompson I'm thinking if Zook is the Marine we called
"Zeke" I knew him. I have a pic ofthe two of us I believe around Con
Thien. I do remember a few hours after the pic was taken he got peppered with
shrapnel, and I as far as I knew made it home. My memory is shot. The other guys
I may have known, but names are gone. But I'm glad were hooked up. This is
something. I teach school (2nd grade) and you can bet were singing the Marine
Corps Hymnn after we say the pledge this morning. In honor of this occasion. From: Dan King I've seen the term used here before, looks like an acronym for something, but don't have a clue as to what it means. It might be one of those things I used to know, but it drifted away. What is CRS? Jim and Mike. Watching you conversation go by was beautiful. I don't even know you guys and it made me feel good. Dan King From: EYates CRS Dan is an acronym (I think thats the term) for "Can't Remember Shit".... And yes, you know, or have at least met Mike and Jim...Both were at the Reunion...What is really wild is that I saw Mike and Jim talking to each other up in the hospitality room....Ha ha ha lordy lordy lordy.... Both of their pictures are on the Reunion 99 page at the Charlie Company web site....And yes, when two men who were more than brothers get together after a long time, it is very rewarding...
