After much 'googling" I tracked down the widow of LCol. W.P.C. Morgenthaler. She informed me he'd returned to CONUS, did a stint with the JCOS, at the Pentagon, then attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI, a tour at Quantico, then returned to the USNWC as an instructor, before retiring. Sadly, he died about 12 years ago, of lung cancer. I forwarded the URL for this site for her use. He was truly a great C.O. and a fine gentleman.

I was attached to 1/1 from 3/69-10/69-BAMBOO BATTALION, Phuong Luc II, 12 miles SW of Dog Patch, off Rt. 1, including the time the Regt. CO thought it would be fun to "rotate" bns around the TAOR-Dodge City-East of Hill 10...1/1 & 3/1... Used to jack-light rats around the mess tent, with C.O. WPC Morganthaller, with a pellet gun. Guy named Putvinskis, "SKI", ran the PX; Gunny Thomas, Great bunch of guys, although age and time have faded the names-NOT the HEROISM. E-mail me if you have any info on the CO.
